Ask any die-hard Metallica fan to name the most legendary live performance in the band’s history, and 99% of the time, you’ll get the exact same answer: Seattle 1989. On August 29 and 30, 1989, during the massive Damaged Justice tour, the band took the stage at the Seattle Coliseum. What was captured on tape those nights—later immortalized in the legendary Live Shit: Binge & Purge box set—wasn't just a concert. It was the absolute, terrifying peak of the thrash metal pioneers.
In 1989, Metallica was a hungry, relentless, and unforgiving machine. Armed with the technically complex ...And Justice for All album, James, Lars, Kirk, and Jason stood on that stage with a level of ferocity that has rarely been matched since.
The tempo was blisteringly fast. James Hetfield’s downpicking was tighter than a vice grip, Jason Newsted’s bass rattled audiences right in the chest, and the raw, aggressive vocals cut like a razor blade. Tracks like Master of Puppets, Creeping Death, and a frighteningly fast rendition of Blackened were fired off like heavy artillery. It was the perfect storm: the peak of their musical complexity combined with pure, unadulterated rage.
For generations of metalheads, Seattle ’89 remains the ultimate blueprint of how live metal is supposed to sound. Raw, dangerous, and impossibly heavy.
That exact energy from ’89? That is the fuel that keeps MetallicX running. As a professional Metallica tribute band from the Netherlands, we set ourselves one clear goal: we don't just want to recreate the polished studio versions of the records. Anyone can play a CD. Our mission is to reclaim the explosive, volatile live vibe that Metallica used to conquer the world in the late '80s.
"When we step onto the stage, Seattle ’89 is our north star."
For us, that means:
No compromises on speed and aggression: You will instantly hear the brutal energy and relentless tempos of the Justice-era in our live sound.
Chasing the white Explorer tone: We meticulously dial in that iconic, scooped, high-gain guitar tone that made venue walls shake back in the day.
Deep cuts from the '89 slipstream: Alongside the stadium anthems, we love tackling the complex, heavy tracks that Metallica perfected during that tour—songs they rarely touch live themselves these days.
We can’t turn back the clock to 1989, but we can give you that exact same adrenaline rush. MetallicX brings the intensity, the sweat, and the sheer sonic wall of sound back to today’s clubs and festivals. This isn't polished stadium-rock; it’s the gritty, high-octane energy of a band at their absolute performance peak.
Because as Jason Newsted famously roared right before the breakdown of Creeping Death: "Die, die, die by my hand!"—and that is exactly the mindset we bring to every single stage we hit.
